I just wanted to take time to say thanks for everyone’s thoughts and kind words. This has been an extremely difficult time for our family and close friends. Margaret and I met 20 years ago at the Round Lake Roller Rink and have been together ever since. We have been married for the last 12 years and have a wonderful 5 year old son. Looking back, I would have never thought that I would be sitting here writing this note today. I can honestly say that Margaret has changed my life. From beating Hodgkins disease in 1988, to colon cancer in 2005, and even the news of her brain tumor in 2007, she has never given up or shown anything other than strength and determination. Unfortunately, this time things do not look good. Although, we can always hope for a miracle! I wanted to thank everyone for putting together this fund-raiser. It will be a great help with medical, hospice and caregiver bills. If nothing else, the event will be a celebration of her life and how she has fought valiantly over the last few years.
Love,

Greg

Margaret’s Story

July 21st, 2008 by monica | Posted in Stories   No Comments »

Margaret (Frayer) Lindner has spent most of her life battling Cancer.  At age 17 she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.  After radiation and chemotherapy she was told she would probably never be able to have children.  Against these odds, Greg and Margaret welcomed Jack Truro into the world on July 10, 2003.  In 2005 the couple discovered they were expecting once again.  At the same time Margaret was told that she had Rectal-Colon cancer.  Because treatment had to begin immediately, the baby was lost.  Margaret endured several surgeries, radiation and chemotherapy for a second time.  Through all of this Margaret has always been someone to admire.  She faced all of these with strength, courage, dignity, and a conviction to live and beat cancer.  Now, just turning 38, Margaret has been diagnosed with stage IV Rectal Brain Cancer.  She went through Brain surgery but 20% of the mass remains in the brain stem.  Radiation followed but it was not effective in destroying the cancer.    Margaret is a life-long resident of Lake Villa.  She graduated from Antioch Community High School in 1988.  Margaret went to work after treatment of the rectal-colon cancer at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Lake Villa where she has been a life-long parishoner.  She worked in the office of Religious Education until she was no longer able.    Margaret, the love of her life, Greg, and her 5 year old son, Jack need our help with mounting, overwhelming expenses.

Please keep this family in your prayers.  If you have questions or comments or would like to share a story about Margaret please post them here.  We are a group of family and friends who are honored to be a part of Margaret’s life.  We want to help Margaret, Greg, and Jack as much as we can.  The pain of this journey is enough but to add financial stress on top of it is mind-boggling.  Check back with this web site to keep informed with Margaret’s progress and also fundraiser information.

Our family hero Margaret Lindner!

The following is a story about Margaret written by her mother-in-law, Patti and  published March 23, 2007 in the Waukegan News-Sun:

At age 14, my son met the most amazing girl at the Round Lake Roller Rink. They became great friends. As the year went by, she became sick; doctors did not know what was making her sick.

At age 17, Margaret Lindner of Lake Villa found herself ill. Two years later after much searching, she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s. After doctors, blood tests, chemo and radiation treatments, her poor body was burnt by the radiation and weak. A friend gave us large aloe plants so we could soak her in the aloe to restore her milky skin back to normal.

Throughout her ordeal, my son and Margaret stayed great friends. My son was 14 and Margaret was 17. Greg was a great friend. He stayed with her through all of the ups and downs. After all they had been though together, the cancer, break-ups and arguments, they finally married and had a son.

All seemed great. Margaret had been in remission for 10 years, she had beaten the odds.

Margaret had become pregnant with their second child. On a visit to her doctor, she had told them she was not feeling well again. Suspecting the worst, he sent her to another doctor only to find a second cancer. What are the odds at 35 and pregnant to hear you have colon and rectal cancer?

She wanted to wait for any treatment until the baby was born. The doctors told her that was not an option. Terminating the pregnancy and starting treatment immediately was the only option. This was her second time fighting cancer. The chemo and radiation left her exhausted.

Margaret is our family hero. Two months ago we received great news; her re-surgery was looking great (one year necessary for a full recovery).

She looked terrific, thin but happy; she was losing her hair, so she had Greg shave her head. Thanks to the will to live for the love of her son and husband she is fighting it again. With help from her parents baby sitting and taking turns taking her to chemo, radiation, doctors and blood tests, she has the love of her parents, relatives and friends. She is our family’s Amazing Person. She is our inspiration. She is our Hero - Our Amazing Margaret.
